The Anti-Allergy Diet

Based on an article from Dr. Oz:

Are allergies causing you to gain weight? This could be reality for some, so try this three week anti-allergy diet to see what foods are causing the weight gain you don't want.

Most people see food allergies as fast-acting, as seen with people allergic to peanuts or shellfish and immediately break out in an allergic reaction. But dairy, a common unknown allergy to many, has slow effects causing inflammation hours or even days later. Research has shown up to 60% of Americans can be affected by slow acting food allergies.

Dairy and Weight Gain

Foods with dairy can cause unhealthy bacteria to overgrow and produce toxins that cause systemic inflammation that swells the intestines and prevents normal digestion, causing weight gain. A dairy allergy is tied to inflammation in the gut, as opposed to lactose intolerance, which is an inability to digest the milk sugar called lactose.



Step #1:  Figure out if you have a dairy allergy that can be affecting your weight!

Main dairy sources:  milk, cheese, yogurt, and butter.

Hidden dairy sources:  desserts, deli meat and fish, breads, and energy bars

3-Week Anti-Allergy Plan:

Week 1:  Remove the Dairy - You must remove dairy for a week, because that is how long you system needs for internal inflammation to settle. Replace milk with almond milk and butter with olive oil. Sorry, but you will have to ditch the cheese and yogurt for a week. (Switch to lots of fruits and vegetables!)

Week 2:  Repair your Digestive Track - Repair the digestive track with healthy bacteria found in probiotics. Choose a probiotic supplement that contains both bifidobacterium and lactobacillus bacteria. Select a product in pill or powder form that has 10-50 billion colony-forming units (CFUs) and take that amount daily.

Week 3:  Reboot Your Body - Start by adding one dairy product at a time and keep a food reaction log. Ask questions like "am I more tired?," "am I bloated?," etc. If you feel you are allergic to dairy, consult your doctor and get tested!
