Fitness First - Get Yourself to the Gym!

It is always nice to get some ideas on how to get ourselves into the gym. Here is a list from the Scottish Skim, a blog written by a young American woman who lives in Scotland. Check out her blog and enjoy!

After working a 9-5 (in my case 9:30-6), it can be hard to motivate yourself to head to the gym for a full on workout. For me, I’ve registered at a gym that is on my commute home, so I have to pass it every day. This gives me a bit of an incentive to go since it reminds me that I’m paying them a bit of a hefty fee to go there every month!

Here are some tips that I use to help get myself to the gym after a long day.

1. Have a gym buddy. I know that people say this all the time, but it is true that if you have someone else to work out with, you’re more likely to go to the gym. Not only can you motivate each other while at the gym, you can motivate each other to get to the gym.

2. Switch up your routine. I’m an avid runner, and I have a tendency to stick to what I know. Warm-up, light weights, treadmill. But for a lot of people, having a set routine at the gym can get boring quite quickly, and it has actually been proven that switching up your routine (i.e. cross training) can actually help you become more fit all around. So try doing some circuit training or ask the staff at your gym to help you with some new cardio machines.

3. Reward yourself. But I don’t mean with food! My gym has a jacuzzi and a sauna room. After a hard workout, it’s nice to take the time to relax and enjoy a nice break. Plus, if you’re paying for it in your membership, you might as well use it! Just make sure that you’ve cooled down and stretched properly before using the sauna or the jacuzzi, and make sure that you are hydrated as well!

4. Try some Fitness Classes. This kind of goes with the Switch up your routine, but in a totally different way. Classes are such a good way to get a well-rounded workout, and they are often really fun! I personally love Zumba, Yoga, and have become obsessed with Pilates. These classes can often work muscles that you don’t often use. For example, after my first Pilates class, I woke up the next day and thought my abs were going to die. It’s such a great feeling knowing that you’ve really worked yourself hard, but at the same time enjoyed something new!

5. Be Gym Ready. This might seem daft, but every once in a while (especially if you become an avid gym goer), buy yourself some new gym clothes. Even if it’s just a new sports bra or some new shorts! I’ve found that if I have some new gym gear that I’m excited about, I tend to go to the gym just to try them out!
