First and foremost, what is DIM?
DIM (DI-Indolyl Methane or diindolylmethane) is derived in the body from the phytonutrient Indole-3-Carbinol found in cruciferous vegetables including broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and kale. Its primary benefit is its ability to assist the body in metabolizing estrogen. There are two pathways for estrogen to take form with the 2-hydrozy pathway being the good one. DIM assists in the metabolism of estrogen in the 2-hydroxy pathway, thus allowing the body to metabolize estrogen quicker and keeping the levels more stable. This becomes more of an issue as we mature and produce less of the other hormones to counter balance estrogen. Although consuming the vegetables listed above is a good thing, it’s impracticable to digest the amount that might be needed for supplementation.
Why should women consider DIM:
As women mature, there tends to be an imbalance between their estrogen levels and progesterone levels especially as they near menopause. This imbalance was coined by Dr. John Lee as “Estrogen Dominance”. He created a bio-identical progesterone cream that helps raise the progesterone level to match the estrogen level. By the way, we carry a bio-identical progesterone cream and gel according to Dr. Lee’s specifications. It has been suggested, instead of raising progesterone to match the estrogen, maybe the first plan should be to lower the estrogen to match the progesterone. Sometimes, both may be in order. With DIM’s ability to assist in metabolizing estrogen, supplementing your diet with it should be considered if estrogen dominance is an issue.
Why should men consider DIM:
Yes, men can have Estrogen Dominance too, only not from lack of progesterone but from lack of testosterone. Low testosterone may lower a man’s libido but having a poor testosterone to estrogen ratio may cause some serious issues we are not able to discuss due to FDA and FCC regulations. Supplementing with DIM may be a good option for balancing the ratio over boosting testosterone. It’s considerably cheaper too.
It’s important to test your hormone levels before taking any action. Even though symptoms like hot flashes might make things obvious, it’s always best to know exactly what you’re dealing with. A simple saliva test kit is an inexpensive way and of course your health care professional should be able to provide you with testing and obviously with professional advice.
